Hello, Greater Manchester!

Welcome to the VivaCity portal for Transport for Greater Manchester. We've been working with Transport for Greater Manchester and their local authority partners supplying VivaCity's Smart Traffic Monitoring, Smart Road safety and signal control solutions, using our AI-powered computer vision sensors, supporting schemes and helping you achieve your transport goals.

About the Project

Using VivaCity’s advanced AI-powered near miss detection technology, the project focuses on proactively identifying high-risk interactions between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists - so action can be taken before collisions occur.

How it Works

Six sites across GM have been shortlisted from 22 possible sites based on:

• Proximity to schools, hospitals, and transport hubs

• Recent KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) statistics

• Existing VivaCity sensor locations to maximise benefit from existing network

Local authorities within Greater Manchester will get real-time access to the VivaCity dashboard, providing:

• Near Miss Heatmaps - visualising high-risk spots and movements

• VRU Counts and Classifications - breaking down road user types and volumes

• Speed & Behaviour Data - understanding how modes interact and where conflicts arise

• Video Evidence Clips - context for the data to support decision-making

Why it matters? Data is integral to safety decision making, both in prioritising investments and in identifying & analysing the most effective techniques and interventions.

This data, and the data already freely available from the rest of the network can be used to make data led business cases for schemes.

Engagement & Collaboration

TfGM and VivaCity will be hosting two engagement sessions for the Greater Manchester boroughs.

Session One: Introduction to the Project
Date & Time: 25th September, 12 - 1:50pm

This session introduces the Vision Zero project, showing how data will be captured and accessed through the dashboard. We’ll also demonstrate our AI-powered Near Miss technology and hear from Alex Marland (TfGM) & Adam Meadowcroft (Stockport) about other data available to local authorities and their Vision Zero Fund bid . The session will highlight how these insights can support your work in making roads safer with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Session Two: Exploring the Data

This follow-up session will take a closer look at the findings from the project. We’ll review the data collected, discuss how it could be applied to local schemes, and share learnings from projects across Greater Manchester and beyond.

Video analytics procurement from the market

After identifying Video analytics as a high quality, accurate, and future-proof route to traffic data collection, TfGM went out to market and awarded VivaCity a 3-year contract to call-off monitoring across the region, including making it available to local authority partners.

The technology was also deployed to control traffic signals in Salford, pioneering an AI-first approach to traffic control. Read more

Traditional road safety management has relied on reactive action, based on after-the-fact KSI data. VivaCity's Smart Road Safety solution is here to make that reliance a thing of the past.

Our real-time data insights help to transform road safety schemes by detecting incidents before they happen, accelerating local authorities towards their Net Zero and Active Travel goals.

This cutting edge technology is being deployed by colleagues in the Salford Road Safety team in a feasibility study to improve pedestrian safety on Leicester Rd.
