Development of Near Miss Technology in New Zealand
A collaboration between Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency and VivaCity to understand the prevalence, nature and severity of near misses across the transport network
VivaCity and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) partnered in an innovative near miss study to enhance the understanding of road safety for vulnerable road users. This project was funded by the Waka Kotahi’ Hoe Ki Angitū Transport Innovation Fund, aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of novel solutions to the country’s biggest transport challenges.
VivaCity deployed 30 of its award-winning AI-powered traffic sensors across 22 selected New Zealand cities, enabling the collection of anonymised detailed movement and interaction data between pedestrians and vehicles, and cyclists and vehicles, to support the ongoing development of near miss detection technology.
This exclusive research project focuses on the advanced application of AI-powered near miss detection technology and methodologies to support proactive road safety initiatives, by identifying danger hotspots and preventing incidents before they happen.
