FAQs
How do Vivacity sensors distinguish between classes of vehicles?
VivaCity detects objects through computer vision. The models which run on the sensors have been trained with 1000s of images so they understand typical shape profiles of a range of objects. This allows the sensor to detect, classify and track an object as long as it is in view.
Are they cameras which give human monitors the ability to see through them as well?
No, they are not.
Do the sensors allow facial recognition technology?
No, the sensors are unable to recognise faces.
What is meant by "vehicle path detection"?
When VivaCity sensors detect and classify an object, they also track it across the entire field of view to return insights like direction of travel and where in the road space the vehicle was. The VivaCity system also then allows you to view snapshots of these paths against the sensor view to understand desire lines. These are completely anonymous and comply with GDPR regulations.
How is this data stored and accessed?
The data is stored in the VivaCity cloud and accessed through the VivaCity Platform.
Can they be used to detect number plates as well as speed?
VivaCity sensors can identify speed and number plates, however, this data is not used for enforcement. The information provided is only used for aggregate trends e.g. average speed or the average journey time for thousands of vehicles. It is not possible to extract an individual road user’s speed or number plate.
Will the police have access to this network?
No, the cameras cannot be used for law enforcement purposes.
What relevant legislation / statutory instruments are being used to install the sensor network?
Anyone can place counting equipment on the local highway in Cambridgeshire (providing they have a license) local highway authorities can also collect data to discharge their responsibilities under section 23 of the Traffic Management Act 2004.
